On the subject of joining I have noticed on some of the joins I have done in brockway the tape is slightly visible in a certain light. Have I got the iron on too hot or put too much weight on the carpet?? I normally have the iron set on 3

They are very good to be fair.

But dont ever leave anything metal underneath it! They work simular to a Microwave oven. I think we all know what happens if you put something metal in a microwave.

Hence i set fire to the carpet we was doing a demo on

    Could be a few things.

1- not hot enough and tape not fully melting
2- too hot and damaging the carpet (most tapes on the market at the moment are crap, you need iron on too hot to melt the tape)
3- tape just crap, to thick
4- to much weight on it
5- Glue seeping through glue stitching and causing a bolge (crap tape)
6- Heat reflective tape?? WTF? (it reflects the heat into the carpet! not what you want)

Ive always used the contract tape, thin brown paper backing with yellow adhesive. Gets a bit more smokey than the white adhesive but that doesnt stick aswel.

if its smokey it would normally mean you have iron to hot.

But it could be down to the tape is crap and needs to much heat.

See if you can get hold of 'orcan' tape. It has a low melt temp. Roberts do a good tape also.

yeah i know someone with a koolglide, they are amazing, you can re-do any section of the join if you are not happy with it, also the new versions sticks solid wood floor planks to the floor on the first row instead of face nailing with a special tape designed for wood. would buy one if you could get the tape in the UK.

also if a heat seamer is smoking it could probably do with a clean probably all the old wax on the heatseamer!

And there are some nasty chemicals that are carcinogenic in that heat seam tape.

What is the difference between a smooth based iron and a grooved based iron?

the grooved irons are designed to fit between the rows of wax on the tape, so the tape is like a track for the iron.
