I have a job next week of 2 walk in showers. Both just under 2m x 2m so in one piece. It is chip board subfloor and the builder wants me to screed it and make the drop for the water to run down the plug. There is no shower curtain or door going in. I told him to put shower tray in which has the drops build in but he want pay out for them. Not sure if I should do this job as there could be problems if fall isnt right. My plan is to use battens round the edge an make the drop from 12mm to the drain, using 700. Any advice would be great as not sure on this one cause never done it before.
Ive done this before overlaping 6mm ply 3or 4 times to make a ramp that steps down then sand it down so you don't have 6mm lips then patch and make good with feather finish it took a bit of time but it worked and is still there 4 years later
Daz I would strongly advise against this and walk away, I have never heard of anyone doing this succesfully and getting it right, as soon as you do this you open yourself up to the argument that the water ain't going away quick enough. It really is and should be the builders job to create the falls in the sub-floor. The trouble with doing this in screed is its just gonna keep wanting to find its own level as it flows to much, the only time I've had success at this is on concrete using rapid and then a 3mm coat of screed over that to smooth out. The best solution is for the builder to invest in the preformed fibreglass tray which has the wade drain built into it and the falls already created, this then needs to be cut into the chipboard then left proud of the chipboard by 4mm or 6mm depending on what ply you are going to use for your base. Having said that watch this space as I will be doing one of these myself in August at the Roehampton Club, I did the ladies shower last year there and the builder totally cocked up the falls I had to spend 2 days putting this right with rapid and screed. This year the board of governers have asked me to do the screed base and the flooring as a complete package which I have agreed. They have had so many problems with their showers, the ladies was leeking everywhere and not finding its way down the wade gulley, so the whole thing was stripped out and re-done with new gulley as installed by the guys from wade very nice job they done to then the builder cocked up the screed, which I put right then installed altro marine and done my exclusive wrapped external corners, then the guys from Altro White Rock came in and put up the wall cladding, and these guys said it was the best example of how the flooring should be in this type of installtion to the point technical took pictures of my work not sure why or even where the pics went. So I will when the job comes up be posting up a porfollio of this installation for all to see.
Yip Id be wary of this mate Lazy bloody builder!! Why is it so hard for some people to do a job right??
Think your right Jay, I will put my thoughts to the builder. He kept saying it will be ok. But as we know if it's not he will be on the phone. He is a rough builder an rushes things so not sure I want to do it really.
