I was told some time ago by the guys at Amtico that Stopgap 500 should not be used in an area where the temperature swings dramatically. I checked the spec sheet and this is what it says:.

    APPLICATION
Spread the material out evenly over the prepared area to provide a smooth uniform
surface, free from imperfections. Best results will be achieved by application thickness
of less than 1mm, but may be used up to 3mm in small isolated areas if required.
STOPGAP 500 is not suitable in areas subject to rapid temperature changes such as
conservatories, except when applied between plywood joints
    .

Do you read that last sentence as typically screeding over the joints or something else?

It says 'between' the joints. It just seems slightly ambiguous to me. Does it mean literally between the joints or spreading along the joints as most of us do.

Well you are supposed to leave a gap for expansion of 1 to 2mm, with that said though how can the ply expand if its fixed securely and how can it expand when I fill it with feather finish or 500, the means don't justify the end result scientifically speaking. For example a floating floor needs a gap for expansion, but then along comes mister no knowledge polish carpenter and fills it with decorators caulk and fits the skirting now its all tight it will eventually start to pop due to lack of expansion. Matt will chime in for an answer to this.

Well i didn't know you couldn't use it in areas of rapid heat change anyway! I cant think why either.

As for the rest of your answers/questions, ye i can answer them ! Not to night tho, im Knackered and basically cant be arsed, been on the tools for 3 days and i cant Fart without pain at the moment. Its bloody hard work fitting floors. Give me back my pen

Put it this way.....It's never broken down with me (that I know of) and I've never heard of it breaking down due to heat variation so I'm not going to worry about it too much for now. Mind you the Amtico guys made a big point of it.

Do Amtico have there own Skimcoat? Are they trying to get you to buy there's ?

To be honest, i think Fballs 500 is one of the most stickest screeds out there.

Couldn't find anything but I did find this thread from 2009 where some guy was telling someone to do the joints with car filler  Fortunately another guy Mattysupra was there to put them right :D http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=226735

I had a customer a few weeks ago fitted the ply himself and did the joints with car filler and he wasn't too happy when I told him it had to come off......and I wasn't too happy at having to go round the floor punching nails home.

When i say off the tools, basically i no longer fit floors every day for customers.

The jobs i do now are the jobs we all hate, basically problem areas or failed floors that i go out to fix. If im not doing that im doing training. The rest of the week im out on site with floor layers assessing them for there NVQ which can involve onsite training if they need it.
