Hi Guys, (and girls if there are any) Thought i would say hello, I have a few questions if a may. I'm currently a store manager for one of the big retailers and want to come out of the shop and go out on the road fitting, I can fit a room no problem but never tried staris/winders/bullnoses etc.... Basically my question is can i just book myself onto one of the available courses from UK Flooring industries and after a 3/5 day course will i be able to go out on the road on my own or is a bit more complicated than that ?

    Cheers....Lee

    hi and welcome.

Well... maybe! i could get you fitting carpets no problem on a 2 day course. But the problem is that all stairs are different. It takes time on the tools to learn properly, what you need to remember is that every job is different.

Still i would defo think about getting your self on a course. o and the forum will be having some courses coming up very soon.

Fairplay if you start on the courses. You will learn the right way from the start and wont get into too many bad habbits, and there are plenty of them. Do you know any fitters you can go out with to learn day to day?

Hi, yes i could do but the thing is i wouldnt be able to give up my job, go out with fitters and learn then go out on my own because i need to earn money to pay the bills, but dont get me wrong im not expecting to do the course and become Britains best fitter, ijust want to be able to get by at first then obviously as time goes by i will pick up things..

Yeah I spose, its getting the work tho. When I started I needed shops to supply me with work and it wasnt easy getting in with them. I was lucky I left my old firm on good terms and they would give me bits and pieces and as I had a van and was self employed I found other work. I had 3 years training behind me aswell.

We dont slag any carpet right stores on here mate and we dont look down on anyone that works at them, why would we? Infact, the mods dont allow any slagging on here.

We dont care who you work for, THIS forum is all about helping each other out :thumbs

I think im going to leave on bad terms because ive hated working for them for a long time and really want to make the break from them if i can, i know a few of the sales rep's for the manufactures and really wanted to supply and fitt around my local area, i have storage worked out already just need to advertise and make a name for myself i suppose.

Yeah, think you will find it slow to start, Like I say you might find a more established firm that can give you a few days here and there to help you get by and that way you can learn from them.

hello, yeah do a course first will give you good habits. Would probably be best if you could work along side an experienced fitter. I never done any courses but was lucky enough to belong too a carpet fitting family background, dragged out school and learnt hands on. Amazed i can barely spell.
