black sooty stuff

    Hi all,
    i have just lifted up old quarry tiles from my kitchen and there is this black charcoal stuff underneath. Can anyone tell me what this is and can i expect to find hardcore underneath this ???

    Alot of the old quarry tiles are direct to earth. I think you will have to dig up so far and have a new sub floor of sand & Cement or concrete putting in. What area are you in?

    we are in south wales..... some of the stuff looks like small peices of coal but when i dig into it thjere seems to be a hard underbelly

    sounds like that is your hardcore. Would need a picture to confirm as there was many different types of materials used under quarry's over the years.


    More to the point tho, what is your need for knowing? what are your plans? are you thinking of laying something else on top maybe?
