U.K.'s first total Wood flooring apprenticeship

    Your Help required

    We are looking to run the U.K.'s first total Wood flooring apprenticeship, this apprenticeship will be run from the Birmingham training centre which you all know I am sure. To run the apprenticeship we need to get some feeling and feedback on numbers that will be interested in applying, we need a minimum of six persons to run the apprenticeship and the ideal age group would be 16 to 18-year-old young persons, we currently have four people booked in for the first run and need six to complete the numbers so we can move forward, we intend to run up to 4 courses side-by-side we have approximate start dates set aside, the first course will run in January and the second will run in February, and so on and so on.

    Had a couple of PM's already asking a few questions, to answer the main one on who will be over seeing the training, well that will be me. In fact it may please a few to hear that it will be me doing the training. As most of you know i dont mess around and i can 100% guaranty you all that the training provided will be the best there is. :idea:

    Just to give you lads and companies a little background that may help see below.

    Flooring Apprenticeships

    We aim to deliver a high quality apprenticeship programme to new or young persons in the flooring trade. The programme is offered on a national basis and is supported by trained industry professionals. Funding is available for both 16 – 18 and 19+ age groups. The apprenticeship takes a twelve month programme, overseen and supported by a nationwide network of qualified assessors.

    Funding for the programme in England is available thought the Skills Funding Agency. Grants (subject to eligibility) are also available and may assist with the training wage of an apprentice.

    Apprentices work towards an industry recognised qualification. They learn specific skills that apply to their specific line of flooring, be it textile, impervious or wood. There is a mix of on the job and off site training at Technical Centres, this is delivered regardless of location and is supported by online learning programme. Apprentices visit the Technical Centre in block sessions, usually one week in every eight, and are visited by the assessor whilst working on site.

    A portfolio is built that recognises the apprentice’s achievements, which leads to the successful completion of the qualification. The programme is referred to as a quality credit framework and there are a number of key elements. On completion of the Floor laying apprenticeship the successful candidate receives the following qualifications:

    • Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Floorcovering Occupations
    • Level 2 Technical Certificate in Floorcovering
    • Level 1 Key Skills in Communication and Application of Number
    • Employment Rights and Responsibilities
    • CSCS Health and Safety Card

    Apprentices take the following mandatory units:

    • QCF01 Conform to General Workplace Safety
    • QCF02 Conform to Efficient Work Practices
    • QCF03 Move and Handle Resources
    • QCF302 Set out for Laying Floorcoverings
    • QCF303 Prepare Surfaces to Receive Floorcoverings
    • QCFC303 Develop Customer Relationships

    To ensure the Apprenticeship best suit the individual needs there are further optional units:

    • QCF304 Install Textile Floorcoverings
    • QCF305 Install Impervious Floorcoverings
    • QCF306 Install Wood Floorcoverings We are currently the only Apprenticeship provider for this unit.

    Our Nationwide Apprenticeship programme has been developed by the industry for the industry. It demonstrates to your prospective customers that you or your fitter have completed a recognised training programme and hold industry recognised qualification. Contact us for more information, we will introduce you to your training coordinator and we will organise all the paperwork. We will help and support both the Apprentice and the employer throughout the training process.

    2.2 describe how the individual properties of
    resilient floorcoverings determine installation methods
    2.3 illustrate the differences between
    homogeneous and heterogeneous resilient floorcoverings
    2.4 explain how homogeneous and
    heterogeneous resilient floorcoverings determine installation and joining methods
    2.5 evaluate the use of spray adhesive, double-
    sided tape and cold weld for installing and joining domestic resilient flooring
    2.6 assess the use of common domestic resilient
    flooring in wet and heavy wear areas

    My brother in law is looking to start a college course or apprenticeship for tileing or wood flooring. He is 25 so cant afford to leave his full time job due to cost of living. Do you have any suggestions of how he could get the training i.e evening classes

    This would be very difficult, how the apprenticeship works is the candidate needs to be employed by an individual or a company; it would then be expected to do a number of weeks on block release.
    The only other thing I can suggest is to book him on some of our FloorSkills training courses for next year we are setting aside a number of specialist Saturday and Sunday days solely for this purpose to allow people to gain training in their specific area. Unfortunately, if he takes this route he would have to pay for every course he takes bought will gain the necessary skills it requires.
