An interesting article from Mr Bourne regarding "FAULTY PLYWOOD".It has/is an ongoing debate on here as we only too well know about.Every month i read the articles with horror!, at the ignorance of installers and in this case the supplier of plywood in question also the staple gun manufacturer. For obvious reasons the names are a closed book as it is becoming a court case. The reason for my posting is the last words from Sid are that "he is going to use some of the installers issues on the ply subject" from this forum.I would have gone into more detail but some of you will purchase the mag so i held back as not to spoil your read.Maybe we should add more on the "PLY" SUBJECT.
There were various interesting "stories" in this month's CFJ. In the piece from and by Mr Editor he manages to blame everyone for the downfall of several small and large contract flooring businesses (except of course wrong practises of afore mentioned businesses), including manufacturers and wholesalers selling direct to the public. And what do we find at the end of the magazine? A "newsworthy" story about one of those culprits flooding the market with cheap offers on all types of floor coverings. - But of course, that's different, they pay to be included in the cfj. Oh, and two pages full of tips on how to prevent/tackle stress for/by managers and their staff. Most interesting piece - truly - is about the Cut The VAT Campaign: http://www.cutthevat.co.uk/
We are like two poles of a magnet!.The reason for the topic is to enlighten everyone on here that this forum could/may/will be involved in topics for the FLOORING magazine for next issue.
LoL - definitely thought I read the title as "Latest cfj issue" We'd better have some topics and or discussions on this VAT issue too then ;-)
It is a massive worry, I used balls 700 on a job today over plywood as the customer didnt want me to use feather finish. Just to be safe of no plylines showing through. Will post some pictures up later in the week
I've not had any issues with ply as far as I'm aware that is. Apart from this weather blowing me away as I carry it in...
It was 9mm ply nailed, the last room he had done had the ply lines show through. That had Been feathered. I didn't do that room, but it has happened to me before so wood screed over ply should stop the lines showing through.
That happened to my mate years ago and he nearly got done for it, it flew down the street and just missed a women who phoned the firm we worked for then she rang police. Nothing happened though just a big bollocking off the boss.
Do you use Far Eastern stamped ply? Do you know if the ply had gaps left between sheets then feathered or butt up tight then feathered? sorry for the questions but just trying to build a picture :|
Is that o.k with you ? Nothing will be quoted from the forum without permission. The plywood thread on here i asked if any would mind us quoting what has been said. I have always said that the forum will back you all if you have issues and 'we' will challenge the big boys and name and shame them if we have to. I have always said that i aim to improve the trade and the products we use. If anyone does not want comments they have made quoted in CFJ then please let me know. On that job ply was far eastern, ply had no gap between sheets. I have plyed any feathered for the last 15 years no different but last couple of years have seen ply lines showing through.
are you taking subfloor and plywood moister readings? Fitters are becoming wise to taking moister reading of concrete subfloors but nobody seems to test wooden subfloors?
Another one of the issues at the moment is the plywood is being kiln dried to 'china's' for example climate and not u.k. A moister test is needed to make sure its suitable for area to be laid in.
Matt it would be usefull to have the correct readings for moisture listed on veiw so that people can refer to them.
mY APOLOGIES mATT FOR PRE-EMPTING BUT I HAVE LOOKED AGAIN AND IT DOES QUOTE THE AFOREMENTIONED REFERENCE TO YOUR FORUM.
