Got a call today from a fitter who I hold in very very high regard. Basically he wants me to go to Singapore to work with a 6 man team fitting on a ship. Wife has given me the thumbs up as it's a 2 week job so will speak to my shops tomorrow just to keep them sweet. Any advice???
Things are good at the minute and I am busy but the experience and the chance to up skill would be brilliant.
Can't remember where I heard the story about the crew who were screeding 100's of square metres and the boat banged against the dock causing a massive ripple flow and fecking everything up
one of my mates does alot of work on the ships, I reckon it would be good but dont do too many or you can suffer at home
It's all carpets and we will be doing 2 out of 12 floors in the 2 weeks 2500m2 and 50m2 of amtico (looking forward to learning lvt). Would not see it as a way of living as I am a home bird with a wonderful wife and daughter. But quite looking forward to it now.
I had the chance to go Italy for 6 months working long hours on ships when I was 22. Turned it down for my a old girlfriend. Massive mistake. I would of earned about £1000 a week after tax so about £26k in 1992. I could of bought a house. Always regretted that. But that's life. Hope it works out mate.
A an old friend who worked on the QE2 when it was getting refurbed was on it for a couple of months doing the carpets, nicer guy you couldnt meet, but when it cane to carpets his work was to put it mildly really bad, but he got shed loads of work because people knew and he had told them he carpeted the QE2
really annoys me that sort of thing. Why should you get work because you blagged your way into installing someone famous carpets or a famous property etc. I wouldnt mind if they was a great fitter. The amount of inspection work we do for famous people because the floors have gone wrong is daft. and the daft bit is they then get the next job because they are now known for installing Mr ..... carpets when what you dont hear about is them going wrong and mugs like me fixing the issues!
I was offered the QE2 years ago and said no they would only let you work while the ship was docked and the passengers were ashore. No good when your not there for a holiday. Know what you mean though Matt, I came across a few guys who bum and blow about this and that and yet can't fit an ensuite or even bother to by a van.
Similar thing with that wood floor I posted on here, very expensive fitting team and customer still saying how good they are and it can't be there fault the floor has lifted and maybe it isn't, but the floor has still been fitted poorly with no expansion left
Well chaps second day on board in Singapore. Arrived to be told that 2/3 weeks was now cut to 6 days. Promises of carpets being up lifted and clear decks absolute lies. The fitters who came out a week earlier are ready to walk just a bit of a nightmare generally because the manager of the fit out team doesn't have a clue. First and possibly last boat I'll do and to think that I gave work away whilst I would be here. Sorry for the rant!!!
Sorry to here that, all these big jobs seem to be crap never organised right you need a x fitter to organise them, please keep use informed. Steve
80 hrs later 2000 chairs moved and felted and then moved back. They have also managed to loose 2 rolls of Brintons and don't seem too bothered about it even though they keep asking if we will be done by Friday. I will be on a plane by then so if it comes hope the managers have a knife and kickers!! The guys that are with me are super stars and a great team and good fitters at that!!! Will post some pics when I can!!
