Exactly what I tell anyone who starts working for me. If you can't prep properly you aren't going anywhere near fitting a carpet.
My old man could be a right **** with me at times when I was an apprentice if it wasn`t up to his standards he would tell me to rip the whole lot up and start again, many an argument and many times I walked of the job.
I also hate when they put the z bars on top of a piece of gripper to bring it up to the hieght of the tiles in bathrooms,I use easyshims
but was he correct tho? sounds like my old man. Many jobs i was made to redo when i was training. I look back now and he was correct, it could of been done better first time around hence i was made to redo it until it was up to his standard. End of day if i managed to redo it to a higher standard, so i could of done it to a higher standard the first time around.
Yeh he was right and I`m a better fitter becuase of it but I felt like kicking the S**T out of him at the time if I could LOL.
We would and still sometimes put a peice of 6mm ply down then feather over the top to the right height.
I just went for a couple of fags and let someone else do it I hate fitting carpet at the best of times even more when the tiler has used 2 ton of adhesive ontop of 22mm ply and left it so high for floorlayer to sort out
I really can't stand tilers, they never finish the tiles in the right place and never put a finish on the doorway. Them and sparks that drop their cable cut offs in every room just after I've swept all the floors.
Either way here is wrong in my opinion. If it all comes down to the prep why is it the dodgy builder that done the tiles has gone an put what ever thickness of ply ontop of the exsisting floor boards I make that just lazy if they do that then it should continue throughout. What they should I believe is to remove all floor boards to bathroom/toilet then fit their 22mm ply an hey hoo we have the same if not almost the same height finish. Shims look cack have you seen how these begin to grin through in a matter of weeks ugly looking things especially with those return ends on them it almost looks like someone left a miyan temple under the carpet in the doorway. An the poor customer ends up with dust and dirt lines collecting on those high spots. What did we do before shims mmmm yes use gripper double banked. How often do we come across these high tiles in doorways all the time an how often do find one that the tiler has finished with a nice ali L edge 1 in 10 maybe. I think ceramic tilers need to go back to school and learn how to finish in doorways correctly and half door close to with out all his snots left splurging out from under the tiles. Schlutter do a great finishing trim for tilers to use where their tiles will meet a different height finish. Its an L edge in different thicknesses, obviously the L part goes under the tiles and the leading edge which will finish against a another floor finish by means of a flap which just swivels up so we can gripper under it fit the carpet in the traditional way and then swivel the flap back down leaving the perfect finish.
