Has anyone used an isolator membrane over the old 9x9 asbestos tiles in a classroom? I'm thinking of using the ardex one (about the best value one I can find) with Polyflor ecomax ontop. Not sure if the membrane will be sturdy enough. The other alternative is to take them all up and screed but I'd rather not. No doubt there'll be a few loose ones that will have to be patched.
Isolator as in the oe with nobbles on underside ? I've sen a class room done in it and looked very bad due to chair marks all over I personally wouldn't use it in a class room
over here 900 schools have been identified as having asbestos products (varying types) so it has become a bad word now. Now we all know that the tiles are minamal risk, but i would check with you local authority about handling this, advise seems to vary a lot but once the "A" word has been used the world panics. If in 2/3 or more years if the janator or a pupil coughs that must be the cause. The H.S.E website used to give advice about the removal of these but i havin't been able to find it recently, so i don't know if your still allowed to do this or weither you or the school have to bring in a specialist. I don't want to panic you but I would really check this out
I personally wouldn't take on removal of anything with asbestos in, even if it is 0.1% especially in a school
can you not screed them in? spray with water scrape up the loose bits prime and coat in bag and bottle, when I done the asbestos course they said that was an option if removal isn't possible.
you can apply stuff over the top providing you dont disturb them. However, thermos tend to become loose if you screed over them. When the screed is drying it shrinks and can pull up the tiles underneath. You may not realise when you return to fit 24hrs later but a few months down the line they will break up. So really you dont wont to try and bond anything to them, best bet is to use a floating system over the top. But again floating systems have there draw backs also.
I have used a Isolator over tiles before and fitted polysafe on top in a canteen no problem yet bin down 5 years now. Steve
