Bloody plumbers come joiners! One of my lads went to a job this morning, nice and easy 2 packs of Knight Tile straight lay no borders. He called me straight away to tell about the prep job ..... the plumbers had been in doing work last week and had apartently brought in a joiner to prepare the floor alongside the plumber. The floor was fitted with 3-4mm hardboard! You know the brown cardboardy stuff, nail heads sticking up out of it, we reckon if was cut with grannies spare teeth and then they decided to just leave an area completely undone! Because of the distance involved the whole day was then gone as we agreed with the customers to fit 6mm ply ourselves and then fit the flooring. As we had said in the first place!! Rant over, peace :stupid
I've turned up before and there's a floor board or two missing! I normally get the customer saying can't you just put 6mm ply over that then?
I tell customer if they are getting it plyed how it has to be and even speak to the builder / joiner as well if I can.
only ONCE in all the years I have been flooring, have I arrived to find, a builder had prepped the floor properly. I shock his hand in disbelief ! Perfect, I mean perfect latexing. This was about 15 years ago, so no decent self smoothing around.
We make a point of telling self prep customers how we want it. Problem is most joiners don't like us flooring guys telling them how do their job. I remember going to a job years ago and the they had fitted the ply with roofing felt nails ..... oh that was a long day
I tell them not to bother now to many times ive been to do a job and they have fooked it up royally, I just say to them let me do it properly first time round as in all honesty even if you do it to the best of your abilitys it still isnt gonna be up to scratch to lay a floor on, some people get offended most people realise its best to leave it to the professional.
