Think I normally pay about £1200 plus vat a year, and MAY just recoup the cost over the year.

Whoever looks in yellow pages these days? I did have an ad in one of the little directories thinking the oldies still use it but they all go online as well now, never had one call from that p1ssing book.

Gave up on Yellow pages 4 Years ago, Same with Yell.com 2 years ago. Over a grand a year for maybe 3-4 jobs for the year that merely covered the Ad fee.
I find that Google places helps. Type carpet fitter leicester into google and I come in at position A (1) Not everyone uses google places/maps but I find if you search from a mobile or tablet, then the places listings are nearer the top than the organic listings.
I also find that get in as many free Ad sites as possible as if they include a link to your website this brings in a lot more site visits.

Finally a mobile site really helps. Most people search for stuff from their phone now and a normal website on a mobile screen can be a mess that has to be zoomed into to even just find your phone number and some people (70% according to google) leave before finding it. This is where a mobile site comes in really useful. when someone types in your address for instance: www.thecarpetfitter.com then they go to your website, but if it is typed in from a mobile, it adds a m. to the front of the address so it becomes: m.thecarpetfitter.com and takes you to a basic, easy to read on a phone version of the website and the option to view your full website with just a click.
I used an iphone app called M.dot it's free, easy to use and does what it says on the tin. I have noticed an increase in calls since using a mobile site. If you haven't got an iphone google for a free website to mobile site converter, just make sure they don't ask for a monthly usage fee as some do.
