Going to have a go at making one of these. Seem to be going through bags like they're going out of fashion. http://www.internode.co.uk/cyclone/
Was crap latex on top of sand/cement but the grinder made it look a lot smoother. Big long hose and kept vacuum outside, got the cylinder type bit from a florist and adapted it and worked a treat. Now adapting a bigger mango chutney barrel as they are a lot stronger and looking to get a pre-pre seperator with a quarter bucket of water before the vacuum with anti static kit to get rid of the really fine dust that kills the filter. The one that you are trying to do mate will work to an extent but it is the physical shape that will make it work, the cyclone forcing waste down with gravity and the airflow, where as a barrel shape the the air and waste will swirl and flow back up, it will work for big heavy stuff but not as well.
