    Hi all

Am having the house recarpeted after extending and redecorating. Dont have much money left and am looking to get the best possible carpet for my remaining cash.

In your professional opinion is it possible to buy decent carpet for £10-£13 per square metre?
i want something decent underfoot, relatively easy to maintain, that i wont have to replace for 10-15 years.

Is that possible on my existing budget?

    Thanks in advance

In my opinion, inclusive of a reasonable u/lay, gripper, and fitting you really need to be doubling those prices, to last as long as that.

nope, for something to last potentially 10-15 years you'd need to pretty much double that budget for the carpet then you have labour underlay bars gripper etc on top of that imho.

Ouch! thanks for the honest opinions. If I went up to £15 - £20 per m2 how long is reasonable to expect it to last for? i may have to scale down my ambitions a bit, save up again and redo them in a few years time.

Neil - i may just get everyone to walk on their hands!

If thats just for the carpet, look for a decent man-made rather than wool, that should give you 10 years + with normal wear and tear,
Lano do some pretty good products, as do Cormar and some AW ranges are ok.I would suggest you find a local independent/Or Mobile, with a good reputation, don't be fooled by cheap per mtr carpet prices and then get stung with accessories, find a carpet you like then get a couple of inclusive all in quotes, but check the u/lays are comparable. I would also advise you buy everything from one company, that means you are just entering into one contract should anything go wrong.

within this price range for JUST the carpet you can get a reasonable polypropylene carpet like cormars primo plus depending on how many people live there etc... i'd say 7-10 yrs wear although will start to look a little shabby after 5 yrs or so as long as you maintain it correctly hoover minimum of 3 times a week and get in a professional cleaner at least once a year. Go for the best underlay you can possibly afford something similar to cloud 9 contract/hyper tread/carpenter's power step or a good heavy 100lb + rubber waffle/sponge underlay, and a good quality installer otherwise it's pointless paying £15-£20 m2 on a new carpet check on here to find someone local http://theflooringforum.com/listing.php

Could use a cheaper carpet in the bedrooms and up the quality for hall stairs landing.

Lifestyle carpets are rebranded carpets from other manufacturers and slightly dearer than the original depending on which carpet you're looking at they can be decent

they are quite a basic twist pile, for what you're willing to spend primo plus/stainsafe heathers/stainfree ultra would be decent'ish for you

If a customer tells me thats their budget i tend to show them Cormar's Primo Plus and Lano's Fairfield. Decent carpets for the money and should get 7- 10 years from them with a decent underlay.

that's what i do, think primo plus is the slightly better carpet for the money though.
