Our stairs have a 180 degree turn to the left, so half way up there is a 6' wide return.

Tomorrow we're having a striped carpet fitted on the stairs and landing...the pattern of the stripe is to run length-ways down the landing and also length-ways up/down the stairs (so at 90 degrees perpendicular to the landing).

In what direction should the carpet be laid on the return?

Is there a norm, or is it down to personal preference? We have asked that each run on the stairs goes all the way to the wall at the back of the return, so no change in direction. I'm wondering if this is a mistake and maybe the return would look better if it mirrored the landing?

I've tried to find examples on Google to make my mind up that way, but not had any luck. Photos appreciated if you've got them!

    Cheers,
    Rich

Did you not discuss this with the shop at the time maybee its a bit late now if its being fitted tommorrow.gen the stripe runs verticaly over the ste edge it may wearfaster if run the wrong way but if thats the way you want it then be aware that if it does wear then you cannot complain to the shop after.

You could have the corners mitred and re-seamed, then the stripe will follow the direction of the stairs. Its a bit of a pain to do and might cost a little more due to the time it takes and extra products, but its worth it and looks mint!

ive been asked in the past to mitre across 1/2 landings but I've always declined thinking any joint across a pivot point will wear quickly?
