    Hi

I'm looking for some advice. We're in the middle of a loft conversion to a Victorian property. We want to put down wood flooring, but keep getting conflicting advice. Can anyone confirm what sort of flooring we should get, and recommend any good suppliers at the low-mid price range.

We're being told to go for engineered wood which is fine.
(Apparently) optimum thickness is 15mm with 4mm of that being the wood
Needs to be fitted as 'floating' (over the heating), ie not nailed or drilled in which would puncture our heating system. However I've read on some sites that we shouldn't fit floating in that circumstance.

Need insulation below it (again apparently) - acoustic insulation to stop noise below. Not sure how vital this is as our boys will be asleep in the rooms below and we don't plan to wear shoes up there? Especially as the other choice is insulation to maximise underfloor heating?

    Aesthetics: we would like

    Dark(ish) wood finish
    Extra-wide plank

We also quite like what they call a 'rustic' finish with lots of imperfections as I think the 'perfect' finish looks too 'new', 'manufactured / veneered' and not like it's been there for years.

Does this give enough info to answer the question? We'd appreciate any advice, or a pointer on where to look online for the answers.

Agree with oddbod Kahrs maybe De capo range or even the Kahrs grande range if you want wide this however is 20mm thick so you will need to find out the tog value of you UFH system. Don't let your builder fit it !! use wood floor specialist every time.

Thanks, both of you - very speedy responses! We'll defintely use a specialist fitter. We're based in West London.

Trouble is, some of the conflicting advice came from a local fitter!

    Some specific questions:-
What's the significance of the thickness?
Should we go with the advice of a floating floor for this type of floor with UFH, or not?
How advisable is it to go for heat insulation instead of acoustic?

    Thanks again!

I think MJFL is showing you a wide rustic board with character.
When you ask for an extra wide board the price range is more likely to mid to high price range

There are underlays designed for UFH which give you a 21db impact noise reduction.Your fitter should advise you correctly.

You should check with the flooring manufacturer if you can float the floor over ufh. What type of ufh is it? Electric matt? We just fitted v4 eiger Phoenix in a wide rustic board, looks great but its 21mm thick!

Thanks all for the input. Merit - the heating is water, not electric.

In terms of buying Kahrs we really like some of their grande range so thanks all for that advice. Should we buy it (if so where) and get someone to fit it, or should we go to someone who can supply and fit it?

    Thanks again

get everything from one place, and be prepared to pay good money for a correct job if memory serves me right Tuplex is OK over UFH systems.
