Just started a new job in some blocks of flats. Concrete stairs with nosings, stringers, stairs are all over the place, trims on the landings, also not level, sit on skirtings, internal and external mitres. Not a nice job really, but a big one. Anyone got any tips for doing the stringers faster. Whenever we do them they seem to take a long time.
if your good free hand with a hook knife, if not measure 100mm on top step and 100mm on bottom step, stringline between two points, cut felt paper to same size as maximum distance, tape paper with low tack masking tape to line, cut in half inch away and then template with one ruler or pencil dividers, remove and place on stringer and transfer, do this first before latex, vinyl or nosing helps with the tolerances good luck, tip, your should be able to use the same felt paper on a couple of flights if using different colours pencils and turning it over possibly
Not come across a quick way of doing it to be honest, its just one of them time consuming jobs to do it right, instead of mitring the corners you could cut them square to speed things up as long as its neat i dont see it being a problem.
We've just finished ding a set of stairs in flats and came up against the same problem. We measured the first half dozen or so and they were the same size so we started cutting them all in the same place only to discover just about every other stair was different!! So, once we sorted out all the internal sides of stairs with the aluminium trims we then had to figure out the external sides to be fitted with 300mm flat skirting, much paper felt later :-(
Then they are called Trims Stringer to the right, trims to the left, We do a lot and my brother is an expert, he flies down them so I never do them Cut yourselve a small section of the nosing, position three or 4 trims in place, position in place with section on nosing and maybe piece of vinyl, always keep a few trims on the stairs as you go down the stairs, square or mitred dosen't make a lot of difference really, he uses a chop saw, Overlap the trims and using a small piece or straight edge mark with a knife between the angle on top and bottom, cut and then tape in place, go down the stairs always keeping and few on the stairs keeping them square, if any little mistakes you can pack up a little on the tread and using repair motar/ latex you can ramp out a little More you do quicker you get, like most things really
Tanks for the replies. Basically we are doing them that way uv, I suppose its just a slowish job. I will post some pics over the weekend. Reason I'm looking to get quicker is because we did 28 stairs in one block and I've got 16 blocks to do.
