So what's the main difference between a flooring primer and the builders old favourite SBR?

Was at a quote today and the builders had "levelled" the floor with Hilka compound (which on the bag has a compression strength of 27) but was primed with SBR.

Had this a few times now. Can SBR act as a floor primer???

Yeah, think so mate, builders use it as a primer on walls before rendering and on floors before screeding.

Think its a slurry mix (runny) bit like real runny latex. It would depend what's going on top. I'd rather do the lot myself

I'd stick to normal floor primer g4l...I'm personally not a big fan of SBR, although it's never done me wrong like. It just gives me that uncomfortable feeling..I've used SBR to prime before installing insulation boards with flexi adhesive on a good few jobs and I've not been asked back lol Still, stick to your norm mate..

No intention of using it mate, just wondered if it's ok to use for future reference

It's a plasticiser and primer for cement based mixes but I assume the screeds we use are much more complex than sand/cement/plaster and perform much better with a purpose manufactured primer. The thing is builder's merchant stock screeds but never the primer to go with them.

mainly used by tilers, but builders are now using this rather than pva
