I've actually spoken to my dad about it and he's gave me advice and said he would contact a old mate to see if he has any work and also will speak to my uncle to see if there's anything they can do to help me out or keep me there but wether he will or not is a different story.

My dad did the same thing when he was my age he worked for his dad and left ect.

Ive put in the effort over the years but don't seem to make a impression so I'm about fed up really lol, yes I fit everything on my own the only things I've not done much of is LVT boarder work and cap and cove but if I took my time I could do it.

there plan is to leave the business to me and my cousin to take over but that could be in 15 years time as my dad is only 51 and I want to be set up by then not just taking over a business

@Nathan. I was in the same sort of situation to you. I worked for my dad and I wasn't entirely happy with my pay because I got less than the other fitters but I was doing more than just fitting and it doesn't seem fair as I was helping to run the business but In fairness to my dad he looked after me, trained me, paid me for all holidays, sick days, all my courses, I drive the new van but I wanted more in wage. We argued about things but that's not a good thing to do. In the end it came down to me taking over and running the business and trying to get more work in, so that's what we did. I now run it and I think im pretty good at it but its stressful and takes over your life. If you are used to doing your work and going home at 4-5pm, then going out on your own might not be for you, it isn't for everyone. Remember everything comes back to you, problems with jobs, wages, being quiet, paying your holidays, fuel, everything. I do like the challenge and I often do 80 hours a week but at times I do think about the days of coming home at 4pm and that was it for the day, so id way it up and if you can become a partner with your dad, it might be a good idea before you throw it in and go out on your own.

I see what your saying but I'm in a different position, I don't run anything, I don't drive a van etc all of which I want to do but there's no chance of that happening any time soon and I don't want to sit in a job where I'm not progressing forward.

Your right I work 9-5 but if I were working for myself I'd have not problem working till silly-O'clock because I'd be earning the money to warrant it.

Not a prayer will I become a partner for a very long time, my dads not even thinking about slowing down until he's 55 (4years) so he won't consider giving me the business if they actually will do that in the future

Nathan, i must say im surprised to hear that you are (what sounds like) being treated like a joey. For all of you that dont know Nathan, well i do and he is not a young kid who cant install floors. Nathan has been to FloorSkills and is full of potential, one of the best on his group.

It sounds to me like they dont want you to better yourself, however we are hearing your side which as above im amazed they dont want you to progress.

There must be something going on, maybe you dont realise your doing something they dont like? i dont know but im surprised. One thing that has me stumped is i think i read somewhere back in the posts that someone else got a pay rise and you didnt ? your cousin?

If so then why them over you ?

i dont want to sound like im getting on at you here but there must be something going on?

    Can you think of anything?

Thank you for your kind word Matt it means a lot co ing from you.

thats exactly how I feel, they don't want me to progress, I remember when I had my van before I asked my dad if I could go self employed and sub to him, his reply was no you'd earn more money then me !!

yes my cousin got a pay rise, it may have been because he turned 21 but he was still being payed more then I was

something I've missed out which I should probably share is I only work part time now as I have 2 children to care for, before going part time I asked for a pay rise so I could afford nursery and stay full time but they declined but now bring in another fitter to help and pay him Xamount which could have gone to me.

PPI think the reason is because its a family business they expect me to do everything because its family but that's not how I see it, for example they got to a gentle mens club to play snooker every week which I don't so when they go on golf days I stay at work etc etc

my cousin also is soft as **** and does everything he is told, gets spoken to like **** by his dad but they know not to treat me like that as I won't stand for it

Very complicated lol hench why I want to go my own way and do my thing

I think a fancy name can sometimes make you seem a bit pretentious. keep it simple. as for the family thing, your lucky. I worked for my father and grandfather over the years, im currently in the middle of court proceedings against my father for screwing me out of nearly 20k. and my grandfather would rather pay some halfwit than help me. im happier now, working for ME than I ever have been working for family. And I guess youll know their true worth if they turn on you for wanting to better yourself.

Good luck with whatever u decide mate
