Not a fitter, just an enthusiastic DIYer and thought this would be the best place to ask

We've got a small room (2m x 3m) that is going to be carpeted and we've got quite a bit of PU underlay left over from the last room we had carpeted (enough for this small room anyway) so I thought I might save a bit of time by fitting the underlay myself and learn a bit..already got a staple gun (going into boards) but have got a couple of questions about the laying of the underlay:

    1. There is already gripper in the room from when it had carpet before but wondered when you lay the underlay should you leave a gap (~5mm) around the edge where it meets the gripper for expansion? Some seem to say to underlay to the gripper, some say leave a gap..
    2. If I were to tape the joins, would gaffer or parcel tape be ok to use?
    3. In a 2m x 3m room and a roll of 1.37m wide underlay, does it make any difference if you lay it length ways or width ways? Any reason for one way rather than the other?

    Cheers!

Cut it net to the grips !
The technical name for leaving a gap is called cutting it short YeeHaa
Lay it on right angles to the floor board's .
Duck tape yes anyrhing else no ?
Or even better let the carpet fitter do it

Also the grips need to be in the right place & really changed everytime so if you fit the underlay & your carpet fitter decides they need to come up you've wasted your time ?

Your fitter would need to see that the gripper is in the correct place first (may have been fitted by an "enthusiastic diy-er?).
If it is, then there's no need to change it.
@Spacey......why does the gripper need changing every time? That's totally unnecessary.

    Cheers guys..

The gripper was installed by a fitter a few years back, all looks to be in good condition and is well fixed!

hi sid hows the power stretcher going, i think spacey meant that when the old carpet is pulled up it bends the pins out of shape and idealy you should replace . i would always recommend on a stairs but dont always on flat work unless its a big stretch or the gripper is pants.
