if the templaye is just for plywood i normally fit the paperfelt tight against skirtings and toilets etc, i then transfer onto ply and cut INSIDE the line and it drops in perfect
I dont like templating vinyl as always seems to be too tight or too short (in my case always slightly short) cant seem to find the happy medium

Was always shown pencil on to paper then back onto vinyl. Then cut pencil line off a fraction.

How can you centralise a pattern if you haven't got the shift to do it that's my point! Or would you advise your customer to have a 4 metre wide vinyl to do this? I know what the answer will be! I agree if you have enough material then obviously try and do it and as for templating domestic vinyl, really?

You can't...you can centralise the piece of vinyl but that won't help unless the pattern fits it perfect.
I template little bathrooms if they are awkward shape. Do it with laminate in bathrooms also. Not that I ever want to fit laminate in a bathroom but have had to do it in the past

Try and centre both ways but governed by pattern / width sometimes

I think we're stating the obvious here guys but as they say "best practice" would be to try and do this which is easy in a training bay but not so easy in an awkward kitchen with protruding units etc. i watched the fita guys setting out a carpet at Harrogate using a row divider creating a line 6" in then measuring back from the skirting to the line to get it straight, again not possible if you have a 4 metre wide carpet and the room is 3.95 metres wide lol. They said not to set the salvage edge off a wall as it wont be straight but measuring back from said wall to a line in the carpet is still going off the wall?

When you go on any training courses you will always be told the best ways to install any type of flooring but it is up to you as a professional to decide which way will give the best results for each job !
