Got a potential job that currently has a floating 15mm engineered wood over under floor heating. All the skirtings are sat on top, door liners undercut. Customer would like a carpet over the top. Are any underlays that are recommended for use with ufh suitable to go over wood (breathable so the wood won't sweat)? My gut instinct is to take the wood up but it'll mean replacing skirtings which aren't a standard shape.
As oddbod says, get them to sign a disclaimer/waiver before you start any works...if they won't sign anything i personally would walk away from that project...
ufh wont work. It will be well over the tog rating with carpet and wood down. Likely it will over heat and cook the wood flooring and give loads of issues.
Didn't know that. you learn something new every day. I don't fit woods so its new to me the tog rating. I love this forum.
Thats why i built this place. We are all still learning ! (including me) Just to note, all underfloor heating systems have a maximum tog rating that can be laid over the top. You should always check the maximum tog rating allowed and supply a carpet and underlay that is under this tog rating. There is a chap on twitter who sent me a message the other week where the underfloor heating (electric) burnt the underlay and carpet. He used to high a tog rating over the top so he got the blame. Looking at his pictures the problem wasn't actually him using too high a tog rating but a heating hat failure. However he was outside of manufacturer recommendations so he has got the blame.
Yeah I remember that on twitter. I love learning new stuff especially to do with flooring. This forum and twitter have both been a great source of info and I've been in touch with a great set of lads plus through going on twitter I got my karndean account sorted. Never thought I'd get one as I thought only shops could get one. Going to meet the lads on the F.Ball course Daz has sorted. Looking forward to it.
On the same job, I'm quoting to change most of the carpets. All on ufh. Existing carpet is on cloud 9 11mm. Its dried out and powdered in a few areas
Heatflow with a low tog carpet keep below 2.5 tog total and get rid of wood you'll be fine, plus never fit carpet over decorative flooring all sorts of crap can go wrong.
I prefer Roma. Fitted over bonded wood before but only using a suitable underlay. Never with ufh and wood though, as I originally said, my gut says to take it up.
