I know there has been a lot of topics regarding this but I can't be a£&;@d to scroll through all the threads ha. Anyway I'm really interested in creating one obviously to see if it generates more work etc.
could anyone on here point me in the right direction or give any advice?

    Cheers.

Yeah I think that's the best option, been routing and seen the ones were their server name has to be first. Don't fancy the look of that tbh

Does that show the host name before your website name?

    OK here goes

First you need to choose a web host where your website will exist on there servers. I use one.com & get free hosting for a year £10 set up free.

Then you choose a domain name which the host can provide. .com or .co.uk seam to be best.

Most hosts will have their own web builder or you can use something like WordPress which I personally didn't.

When you made your site which can take a while depending how large & how detailed it is you publish it.
Use key words to described your business, what you do, where you are & cover basically to help with search enquiries so you potential customers can find you easily.

Then you need to register your site with Google webmaster tools to take owner ship & so Google knows it excists.

Then you need to submit URLs to Google for each page of your site. You can put anything as a URL but best to use words that a related to search enquiries you want to be found by.
Then you need to make a site map which can be done for free Just search free site map & its straight forward you don't need to be able to write in code for any of this its just copy & paste the code you get into your file manager with your host.
This let's Google find its way round your site & scan it to decide its relevance to a search enquiry.

There are lots of vids on YouTube search Google webmaster tools which can help you step by step through everything. Its not as complicated as I've probably made it sound just do your research before you start.

Hope this helps & makes sense

Building your site is the easy bit. If you don't do all the rest with webmaster tools its a waste of time youd just have a dormant site you can only find if you type in the domain name !

Just ask if you get stuck

    Good luck

If you've got the time Nemo, build your site using wordpress...Go to 'wordpress.org' NOT 'wordpress.com'! It's a steep learning curve but worth it if you plan on beefing the site up in the future i.e. Hooking on ecommerce, blog etc. Watch some youtube tutorials on building a site with wordpress. Highly recommended.

I use 1 and 1 for my 'hosting' and I have to say - as far as my experience goes - their tech support is fantastic. I did make the mistake of using their 'click and build' feature for designing my website at first and it really limited what I could do with the site. They've now brought in the click and build 'Free mode' option which is a lot less restrictive.

Thanks for the input mate, I've just started with the one spacey mentioned got all set up and had a half an hour play about. It does seem quite complicated but haven't looked on YouTube yet and tbh I'm not that computer literate I can do the small things but once it's asking for coding and whatever it goes straight over my head. I suppose once I've got cracking it should come easier.

We're hands on guys mate. This tech stuff doesn't tend to come naturally to most of us :) Wordpress and coding battered my head for a long time and still does sometimes..

You'll probably learn a lot of stuff you didn't expect by just getting a site up and running yourself. You can always start over in the future if your plans become bigger with what you want to do with the site. My first site was shocking, 3 rebuilds later and I'm pretty happy with it right now. You might just want your site to be an added compliment to your current business, which is fair enough. My opinion would be to make sure you put the effort in to make it look the part. A bad website can equally put people off as much as a good website can really drive home them conversions.

It's an interesting journey IMO..Good luck with it mate..

    Just shout :)

Cheers bud I've had a good go on it this afternoon and it's slowly coming too me. Must admit YouTube is a massive help, and like you mentioned I'm just going to keep it simple and efficient for now and see how that takes off. Will be doing tweaks and improvements for a while til I'm satisfied haha slow process.

Google always seem to move the goal posts when it comes to good SEO. It used be links, then blogs, reviews, Now, according to my web bloke, one of the best things for page ranking is having a website compatable for mobiles.

I'd rather leave it to someone who specialises in that department to do it for me rather than coming home after 10 hrs on your knees and probably just end up throwing an iPad through a door!!

Google doesn't Change the goal posts !
All those things are relevant & anything that keeps your site constantly updating a relevant. Basically if a site is dormant no changes accure it will drop like a stone so things like a blog or linked twitter account (mini blog) will keep a site fresh & relevant !
Sounds like your web guy is after selling you a mobile version of your site £££

A good tip for doing your own SEO work is the book...'SEO For Dummies' its the best £20.00 i've spent on anything website related and it works big time...
Everything is explained in simple layman's terms [much needed in my case] and is pretty easy to understand thankfully, it helped move my website from no-where to pretty much the top of the SERPs in Google for the search terms i have put into the particular page on my website.
Not the most interesting book you will ever read but follow what it says and your website will fly up the rankings...
