You would of done, one thing they make sure they point out. Yes it can make a difference as the test across the grain will be reading different vessels of moisture. True reading should be same direction as grain , so hitting same vessels or vessels in same location.
What do the guidelines say? I would presume they would say nothing as someone might bring out a meter that can read in any direction or might even be able to scan like the tramex. The guidlines and BS standards will never tell you how to use equipment as everyones is different. Technically the BWFA should not tell you how to use a pin meter, they should simply say " with this meter you use like so" You should always refer to instructions. but im sure that would of been said so :beer
