Hello all.. This is my first post on The Flooring Forum. Im currently renovating my new property and want to sand down and varnish the original floor. Im very much a beginner when it comes to DIY and am no way a professional, so could do with all your help and advice I can get. Ive started taking up the floor and the wood seems to be good enough to sand and varnish down. However I ripped up the last bit of the old cheap floor yesterday and discovered a big block of concrete on one side of the house. Please see photo link bellow... http://s29.postimg.org/6qkreklhj/floor.jpg I have had a peak bellow the floor boards and see this large block goes down to the ground (about half a meter). Any idea how i can tackle this - Is it possible to chip away the top layer to then put new floor boards over the top ? Thank you all ! PHIL
Certainly looks like an old fireplace, strange place so close to the corner, unless this was originally a larger room and at sometime made into two rooms. Yes it can be taken down but it will be a fair bit of work. You would need to lift some of the boards to stagger the joints or it will look a lump of wood set in. Or course you could place a chair over it BTW welcome to the forum.
