I did a job at Christmas the screed was wet 88 - 90% so I 2 coated mapei 1k turbo, I swept and hovered the floor and used a little rad roller for the perimeter and a 12 inch roller for the main area ( it wasnt to thick and never blistered or bubbled ) taking the 1k turbo from a paint tray rather than pour onto floor and then roll out then latexed with screed master 2, f46 then karndean van gogh, but I got a call from them today so poped round because of 3 raised areas about 12 inch by 4 inch, I removed one plank and the latex had blown not a real problem I know but then noticed the 1 k turbo was loose and I could peel some up but it had about 1 - 2mm of sub floor screed stuck to it I've never had a problem with 1k turbo and never seen it like this the sub floor screed When rubbed with a knife just crumbles to powder the piece of turbo I took up like I said has screed stuck to the bottom of it and when I rub it all screed rubs off leaving a thin film of 1k turbo, has anyone had this or know if it's something I have done or would a very week screed mix cause it
I wouldn't be surprised if it was the weak screed. Why was it so wet mate? Just drying out or old floor?
I've put a latex on a screed which was like that once, told the builder it was too soft, he wouldn't listen, the whole latex cracked. Won't be doing that again.
Yeah it's really thin it's like rice paper maybe 1/4 mm thick if that, like you said was almost invisible when rolled on
I've just noticed its 2 coats! One of the Amtico fitters I use to work with would always whack the screed with a hammer and if a big bit Come off he would dig it out and re do it with one of the Ardex products. A33 or 35 I think.
Did you put 1k straight on to the builders screed or onto a compound you put down? If straight onto builders san/cement screed then it could be coming off because of the laitence (crust on the surface) which should be ground off first. Just re-read your post - it was 1k on to builders screed - bet its the laitence. Did you grind it first?
I always run over a screed with my buffing machine with 40 grit paper on and never had this before, do you mean this or like a poor grinder / scrabbler ?
The screed has failed. the 1K turbo has the builders base attached to it ! Hence the base has failed. The 1K turbo has actually done its job as it seems to of penetrated and pulled up more than surface dust / lattice. Its not surface lattice as its not a fine layer but looks like a 1-2mm of the concrete surface. Builders screed looks substandard.
This is all new to me as never had it what action should be taken next, the customer has a list as long as her arm of things the builder has bodged can I get it tested can the builder be made to pay for it or is it down to me as I've fitted it this is one that I want to get put right correctly as not only is it a job with my reputation on she is a mum of a child at my daughters school and I see her a lot, I want to put right rather than make good
Ardex do a hardener that you put on a bit like a resin but if it really weak I reckon your best off digging it out. Not sure how you will tackle the builder. I was lucky as I had already told the builder I thought it would fail and he took the risk. After it all cracked I refused to stick the wood floor down and he ended up plying over the screed and tiling it instead
1K turbo does as you have suggested mate. However it can only harden a subfloor as deep as it can penetrate it.
I thought you may say that, I only found out about it when I had this problem but didn't fancy taking the risk on it.
Thanks matt the builder in question still owes me £4k for another job that he apparently hasn't got to give me at moment so if I can get anything over on him it will make me smile a little, I'm so happy I no longer do work for this bloke
I would have to stand in line there's a very long que, but I brought his old house and he has a bit of land next to it where he keeps a lot of materials mini fuel tankers and small diggers very soon they will be missing and I'll sell him identical ones for £4 k
