In September we had LVT laid throughout our hallway, kitchen / diner, utility and WC. We stipulated from the start that we did not want beading around the edge or silicone (bad experience with our previous floor which was siliconed and always looked grubby) Was told it was not a problem and that the floor could be fitted flush with the skirting with no need for anything else. Floor was fitted and we were really unhappy with the finish. The cutting was terrible and there were large gaps between the skirting and the floor. Fitter said he would replace the planks we wanted to rectify the situation. He came when we were at work and left. When we got home that night he actually had made some of the areas worse. The floor was short in some places and then curving up the skirting in others. He has recently been to try and rectify it again - meaning this is the third time some of the floor has been laid. We agreed that he would undercut the skirting to allow the floor to slide underneath leaving a neater edge. He came over the night before he was due to come to replace and we were given the impression he would be doing that around all of the skirting and architraves. I also agreed to silicone around the front and back door and side of units as he said that was required. When we arrived home there is randomly placed silicone, really messy silicone, some skirting has been cut but a lot not and all the architraves has been silicones around. He has also used bright white silicone between a beige coloured skirting which I think looks ridiculous. What I’m asking is… am I being unreasonable saying this is a bad job? He is adamant he has done a great job and has said we would need to take him to small claims court as there’s nothing else he can do. Is this really the best finish I can expect? Thank you so much if you’ve managed to get to the end of this essay! I would really appreciate any opinions / advice even if it’s to tell me I’m being unreasonable!
Looks bad. Have you paid for the job? Was it a cheap job ? Did you go to a shop or buy online and find a fitter.
I had a few quotes and he wasn’t the cheapest. Almost £4000. He supplied and fitted the floor, he’s an independent guy. Unfortunately we have already paid. It’s an absolute nightmare!
Not great cutting in. Just get him to replace the cuts until your happy. They are all short. He obviously doesnt fit much lvt herringbone into skirting!
He won’t replace again. He has said that there is nothing more he can do and we will never be happy. He has suggested we go to small claims court. He is confident we are being unreasonable and that he has done a great job!
He should have undercut all the arcs to slide the LVT under to get a better finish unless he cuts around them neat. Should not need any silicone unless maybe a bathroom.
Yes that’s what I assumed he was going to do. He can’t cut them neat. Here is a photo of before… this is obviously before the woodwork was sanded and painted which makes it look extra rubbish but it was bad. Now, rather than cutting them and sliding the floor under he has just filled it all with silicone. Thanks so much to you both for your replies. I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t me being extra picky. I think we will look to get an independent inspector to do a report. God knows how much that will cost but we’ve saved so hard and waited to get this floor done I really don’t want it leaving like this!
Always baffles me when a fitter can walk away singing he's done a great job when his cuts look like that!! He obviously has very low standards, that's awful finish. I'm not a fan of silicon but if my customers ask for it then I'll do it. I advise against but alot do prefer to have it for mopping purposes Always done with a tool though and not my big toe like your fitter has. If he seriously thinks that he can't do any better and you'll never be happy as he's saying then the small claims court is an option but could be a long process or bite the bullet and pay a proper fitter to come in and sort the crap bits out - not fair you have to pay but it'll depress you the longer you have to look at it. Is this fitter well known near you? He got a facebook page where you can leave him a nice review? Name and shame him, bloody cowboy. Maybe he would do better if he used a knife instead of nail clippers to the lvt
That last pic is terrible. Contact floorskills and say you have been advised on this forum. They will come out. If it goes to court all fees are paid back if you win and you should do.
Thanks so much to all of you. I appreciate you all replying and making me realise that I’m not being picky!!
He did have a Facebook page when I hired him. It has disappeared though. To be honest, I think he had only recently set up his business but he does work as a full time fitter. I chose him because he seemed so knowledgeable and confident in his ability to do the job. As I’ve said earlier, he wasn’t the cheapest but he was the guy I liked the best. I honestly think that he believes he’s done a good job. I don’t think he realises that it’s not acceptable. I am going to contact a reputable local fitter to come and quote to try and sort the mess out. I just hope someone will agree to do it. I will then ask original fitter for money back to cover the cost and if he refuses look to go down the small claims court route.
