Hi My ambition is to become a professional floor fitter. I would like to have the ability to lay a vinyl, carpet and hardwood floor. What would be the best way for me to go about getting the training? I'm 19 and live in Bristol. I've studied all sorts of building (mainly Carpentry) and am currently a Maintenance Supervisor at a 4* hotel. I am willing to work weekends for free to learn the trade before hopefully eventually completing an NVQ. I've found it difficult to find a training centre or a college that offers a floor covering NVQ which is why i'm asking for advice from the professionals themselves. All advice is appreciated, Thanks! Jordan
Well i'm pleased to report i've just spoken to a local flooring company who have offered me to work next weekend fitting some vinyl and if all goes well he said he will train me. Very pleased and hope it goes well.
Nice one if you spend the time to read through the posts around here you can get a bit of a head start on diff ways of fitting tips etc lots of useful info around here, any questions just ask there's a lot if very knowledgable free advice offered here
Here i am to save the day ....... Best bet mate is to phone 'FloorSkills' on 01564 703 900. We can set you up on a apprenticeship fully funded and get you trained along with a NVQ at the end of it. All you need is a employer . Ring me tomorrow and i will get you set up. www.floorskills.co.uk
That is fantastic Matt. Only concern would be my current job which is mon-fri and is essential for paying my bills :/ It would be a big loss in wages Regarding the employer, I could have one if this company who've offered me a job on the weekend to see if they like me working for them which im sure they will. Thanks
Well they know I work monday to friday but they said they could offer me evening work and weekend work. I said i'd work for free as i'm that keen to get the training but they wouldn't want someone working for free so they would give me a bit of cash
Basically yes aha! I'm not fussed about the money though to be fair. All I want is to work towards a qualification.
top of my head , if i remember correct you need to do i THINK 14 hours a week in the flooring trade to get 100% funding towards your training at our training center and a NVQ at end. If what i say is correct (need to check) then it will be easy for you to knock up 14 hours over a weekend and on evenings / mornings etc. However, you need to be out there practicing what we show you on the training course. If you don't get enough practice then you will struggle to pass your NVQ. Add in the fact that we teach to a VERY high standard we expect you to preform to a HIGH standard when we assess you. (our job is to make you one of the best no matter how many hours extra my trainers will put in to help you.) We don't do Micky Mouse courses. Our courses are designed to a very high standard to make you into a very high quality installer. We need full commitment off yourself. Sorry to be blunt but we are the best and produce the best installers for a reason, if you cant commit then sadly i have limited spaces that will be offered to someone else. Your halfway there though mate, you found the right forum and you are already showing me commitment in actually searching for a course. You may just become the U.k apprentice of the year !!!
I totally understand that. This qualification would definitely mean more to me than my job but it's just the fact the money I get from my job is essential. I would work more than 14 hours a week easily, I would probably do around 25 if I worked evenings and weekends. I'm not one to lack in commitment. I would be chuffed to bits to one day be able to say I am a professional in something I've always wanted to do.
