We want to uplift our wooden flooring & replace with carpet. We have discovered it lies on battens, therefore leaving around a 4cm gap between concrete floor & the bottom of the skirting.
What are our options? Looking for the most minimal of work.

Could replace the wood with chipboard. It would need to be a dry subfloor tho or it will create damp

It’s a concrete floor so I’d like to think it is dry? The other option would be to remove the skirting & replace with a higher one?
    Which option is less work/expense?

Well yeah if you don’t have to build the floor back to the original height just renew the skirting boards.

Our house is around 30 years old, as for the age of the floor - no idea, I’d assume it’s the original.

Could we lay over the wooden floor?

If it’s solid then I don’t see why not

I've laid carpets over solid wood floors before. That would be your easiest option...

Thank you, I think this is what we’re going to go for & trim the doors.

I just completely agree with renewing the skirting boards.

I'd renew the skirting boards. Because as there's a gap getting a customized fit will make sure there is no gap left. There are some great tips here when considering which skirting board to replace with, sizing, etc. I think some pre-primed skirting will save headaches if you're doing it yourself.
