Hi all. I could really do with some advice on which type of carpet and underlay I should purchase for our living room and stairs and landing. We don’t have underfloor heating and the floor beneath the living room is concrete.

I’m looking for carpet that is hardwearing/durable and is less likely to go flat. I’ve read about polyamide/nylon carpets and I’d be interested to know your opinions.

I have a young son so carpet that is easy to clean and stain resistant would be most welcome!

We’re not on a strict budget as we’d rather spend more now for a good quality carpet that will last.

I hope to hear from some of you soon. Your advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Victoria heartland is our favourite and sells really well
Abingdons stain free ultra is decent as well

As mentioned Victoria Heartland is a great go to and value for money.

Man made are easier to clean but will also always flatten quicker than wool. Stains on wool will go but need a bit more care and attention (some manufacturers are now offering a warranty where a specialist cleaner will visit free to treat stains).

A good underlay will be essential as well. Make sure it’s a high density PU foam if you go that route.

Thanks to both of you @Simon Grimley and @dazlight for your replies! Much appreciated. I now know what to look for. Just one more question, can you advise on a brand of underlay? Thanks very much.

I’d go with either Ball & Young Caviar and Crystal 9mm or Plushwalk from Wilson’s

  6. The carpet fiber that you choose for the living room floor affects both the look and the durability of the carpet. Options include: Nylon: The most resilient carpet fiber, but it must be treated with a stain protector occasionally. The softest and strongest type is 6.6 nylon.
