I recently had some Khars engineered flooring installed in my flat. The job mostly went OK but the floor is really bouncy in places. Have tried relaying it to get it flat but no joy. Basically I'm looking for somebody to come out and fix the problem. If you're still reading you will want to know the specifics: London, N1 Concrete subfloor which is level, confirmed with spirit before starting About 35m2 spread across 3 rooms - no thresholds, boards all joining 15mm thick, wide plank Khars underlay with DPM built in Any other questions I'm happy to answer. You need thresholds in all doorways fr expansion and why not get the firm who fitted to come back? If floor is level then it should lay flat so possibly not perfectly flat in those sections.
I did get him to come back and he relaid all the planks but didn't help. He's an old-boy carpenter and I feel it's just reached the limits of his expertise. Regarding the thresholds, do you think it's possible that is what's causing the current problem? Or are you suggesting it might cause further problems down the line with things like expansion?
If this floor has been fitted net without expansion and not by a professional, I see on another post it was a d.i.y job with this carpenter mate of yours, then here lies the problem.
Hi Adam, I'm not really sure I understand you. The is an expansion gap around all the way round, the skirting is not down yet so I can still stick my finger in it!
How many mm expansion has been left around the area, is it in accordance to khars recommendations, has the floor got wet? It shouldn't be bouncy.
I've attached a photo of the current expansion gap. Does anyone have any ideas as to other things that could be tried? Thanks
hi how was the flooring stored, maybe it has warped prior to install? was it left to acclimatise? sounds like subfloor not flat to me though. how much deflection is there between floor and boards? i wuold check the floor level underneath and remedy as required .
You need few advices form experts to come and check your floor. The experts must to find the problem after walking on the top of the bouncing. Could be few reasons. If the floor is not smooth and if is dark you can't see exactly how bad is it. Specially oldest fitters having lower vision. You need to check with good long size spirit level. Another reason could be if the underlay is overlapped or is touching the skirting board. Thanks
I am too far from you unfortunately. It is hard for experts to discover the problem remotely. I am sure with pictures will be the same. With complains the way is you need independent registered expert to check the floor and do a record of the investigation.Then the record can be use at the court. If the report shows the problem is with the installers, they have to sort it out the rich the satisfied level of you. I am independent contractor and i had similar problem with different floor. The inspector find out the problem was with materials, so my supplier gave me new different material better quality specially for my customer free of charge. The charge of this inspector was about i think £150 or £200 plus vat. Some one need to pay for him. My supplier paid on for my complain, they said to me if is your fault you will pay the charge, but it wasn't.
We've offered advice but not the right answer to a reason of why a floor has failed because it wasn't fitted by a professional, we claim to know our way around a floor or two by various courses we all go on yearly - I agree with pro flooring that an inspection locally would be the only answer, where you based, someone on here could be local and able to take a look
Call Sid at Independent Floor Assessor 0121 258 4124. Not sure what the charges but he will work out what the problem is, write a report and if needed he could be an "Expert Witness" in court.
