what was the first carpet you were let loose on ? I fitted a carpet called Cambourne Wilton, which was mottled and 27 inch body, and was sewn up by machine by the senior fitter
you might laugh at this because I have heard the stories about ex allied/carpet right managers getting certified and going on the tools lol although my story is completely different I fell into the carpet trade by accident, was looking for a job signed onto an agency and they posted me at a temp job within an allied carpet store - warehouse work....managing the instore warehouse keeping stock levels up roll stock, end of rolls and floor displays...oh and sales on the side which I got comission from. Done this all by myself was a tough job stocking them 4 mtr roll stands on your own...but anyway within a year they asked me if I wanted a managerial role in a sattelite warehouse...I was 18 and said yes.... I managed the stock for 2 stores, carpets, beds and sofas etc and the allied contract stock, for the south of west brom from this warehouse, and managed the fitters from both stores in the morning. I had four older guys below me who were inline for the job that I had recieved.....needless to say they all resented me at the beggining and some until the end...I felt that I was pushed into this job and I was too young etc....I had many offers from carpet fitters to help them out as a boy/helper...but I was a bit unsure...security etc fitters would roll in the warehouse 3-4pm saying earnt this today...so it wasn't to long before I decided to hand in my notice and join one of the fitters....he was an a$$hole though...I'd have to knock him out of bed then walk his dog in the morning while he got ready....lasted 2 weeks and he knocked me for 1 weeks wages.... then the guy from Allied contract Dept offered to take me on...I travelled the UK and gained some good experience worked hard and a good laugh on the way.... anyway back to the story, my first carpet...while I worked in this sattelite warehouse I done the stock checks, left one carpet that was sitting there for a while and missed it out of the stock check (american cut and loop, it was the fashion lol)....took it home borrowed one of the fitters tools. I had watched fitters before when I worked in the shop and new roughly what to do I done everything to the best of my knowledge, everything went perfect up untill I fitted the bay area.....it was the last wall...I cut it an inch short...managed to stretch it an inch...I don't know how I done it, I had bloody sore knees that night....
yes you are right there, i,ve been at ti for almost 39 years now and my knees are just about holding out
