personally if its carpet going down and the consumer cant afford plywood i would purchase a £40 quid plane and rip the floor boards flat.

I presume you are installing Hardboard due to a uneven subfloor or is there another reason?

Ha no that wouldn't work its really uneven with massive high spots , even over boarding ain't gonna cure it , there very wide and all over the place , the house is right out in the country, it's like a barn but it's a house !

well if its that bad then hardboard will only be masking the problem? You will still be showing through the dips etc but taking out the edges of boards showing?

I presume that the floor has been like this for years and has not changed due to resent issue to the property. Something like a new drive way or flower beds etc.? Do you have a moister reading of the boards to make sure that its not a moister issue under the boards or even above the boards causing the issue? Could be something simple like blocked air vents causing the cupping/crowning of the boards?

If it was an old barn first then the boards would have warped prior to becoming a house, to some people it's charactor.

only if the moister content that the boards was dried to or the cut of wood didn't suit the area it was used in. They could of been perfectly flat while it was a barn (if it was a barn) and the introduction of heating has made the boards move.

But thats all a guess without taking moister reading of the boards and a site inspection etc.

Because ply cost double and it about 60 to 70 sq m
Unfortunately it will come down to cost

I take your points but The boards have been like this for years and the reason for doing it is
    1. To prolong the life of the carpet
    2. To help stop the draft there is major gaps in between .
If you saw the place you would see where I'm coming from !

perhaps the customer is happy for the floor to be uneven but don't want the floorboards to cut through the carpet?
Where are you based at Robroy?
