    Hi all,

I’ve been seeing recently on some jobs, the gripper is fitted down the side of the risers on both winders and straight stairs.

Is this the correct or wrong way?

    Risers on winders definitely
Rises on a straight flight of stairs is a bit extreme

If straights taper from front to back then it does help to get a nice finish

Good Lord, turn them under. I am feeling I might get banned soon because I am too old school and too clever.

The last thread where I exhibited some of my 40 years plus knowledge and experience has just been closed down following my latest post there where I respectfully asked for an explanation of my alternative thoughts to Floorskills policy.

I can see the reasoning behind doing this on the inner section of winders, though do find this to be unnecessary and likely to take excessive time due to the awkwardness of trimming. However, gripper is fine when the angle of tuck is 90 degrees or more.

Parts of winders on the outside sections where newel posts are placed mean that one would be tucking into gripper at angles of 45 degrees and even more. Surely at least some areas here would require to be turned over, otherwise the installation would be extremely vulnerable?

I was taught the fold and turn way and its a good finish, but grippering the sides of the winders takes an extra 10 minutes on 6 winders and the time is made up for when fitting as its much easyer to cut and tuck it.

The finish is far better,no debate on that.

I don't put gripper down the sides and get a good enough finish with turning

i can do that too,the finish is more than good enough, but its not better than gripper down the sides. most of my work is site work and its not appreciated but i still do it as long as i have time too,its called pride in your work.

Fully grippering winders makes a much better finish in my opinion

I turned the winder edges my whole career(28 years) until I picked up on grippering the edges a couple of years ago via another forum and then a mate who started doing it before me.
Wouldn't go back to turning now, yes it takes a bit extra time to do the grippering but the fit is easier and it looks so much better

I think it would be great if the next person to do a winders job could video the prepping and the fitting using grippers down the side to see the finished job, defo something I’m interested in starting to do.
