What Trade would you like to do? I would of liked to be a spark, nearly did too but changed my mind when loads of lads on the day had selected that.
Dude thats exactly what I wanted to be but my father said over my dead body cause they can't even clear up after themselves.
I don,t know what trade i,d like to do now to be honest, but i left school at 15 in 1970 and was an apprentice plumber for 6 months but it wasn,t for me. I didn,t have a head for heights and in those days plumbers had to do the lead work around the bottom of chimneys and that was scary. I still remember how to solder copper pipe and basic plumbing which comes in handy at home.
I have been through a few trades. I started of as a mechanic at a Porsche/Ferria specialist. However, earning £37.50 per week YTS training i didnt stick at it long. Then i went on to painting cars, again i was still on YTS (£37.50) but my gaffer knocked it upto £80 quid a week! But after seeing my dad pay his apprentice £150 quid a week i went to work for him. I was already trained as i used to work on a Saturday with him from the age of about 12. I have also worked on the weekends with my Grandad fitting alarms and doing electrics so im trained up there also. (not qualified) I have also done a fair few weekends with my mate learning plumbing so again im pretty much trained there also. (not qualified) SO..... What would i do? If i was to go back into another trade i would go back to being a Mechanic. But it would be specialist high performance and race car builds. As some of you know i have a race car and have gone back to doing my own builds myself. For instance tonight i have stripped my gearbox etc. As its a specialist job i know what the specialists charge. For instance what i have done tonight i payed someone else £450 quid to do. But i did it myself tonight in around 3 hours! I dont think anyone can complain if you was earning that sort of money. (£150 per hour) In fact 2 weeks ago i fully stripped and rebuilt the engine. The labour on this last time was close to £7500. I done it in 2 days!! Yes i had help doing the work by the chap who originally built my engine. But i ended up doing it with him as we had a piston failer that was down to a faulty piston. Like when we get a faulty carpet we dont get paid to replace it and the same situation was here. As a race engines don't have a guaranty i struck a deal with my engine builder that i could use his premises and tools to rebuild it with his guidance if i needed it while he got on with other work. He paid for the parts that needed replacing out of his own pocket as i was supplying the labour. Here is a pic of my car 2 weeks ago-
I can see Matt's big end! I'm already on my second phase. Up till just over ten years ago I was in constructional steelwork and quit my job as a contracts manager due to stress gradually killing me. Drifted into flooring and tiling fairly soon and no regrets. My current 'hobby' is developing a cast polished worktop system which can be developed into other products. Once I get near perfection I'll be starting phase 3 of my career. I wanted to be drilling for oil but I thought it might be boring.
That pictures giving me a headache, I wouldnt know where to start! If I wasnt doing flooring I would probably still be in the pub
I would go back into flooring but do it properly from now on and also i would stop rippin customers off (kidding).
I just remembered I wanted to join the navy but eyesight was an issue at the time and I was quite short sighted. The irony is I now have perfect eyesight.
