Hi. I’m a 25 year served carpet & vinyl fitter. Board with carpet and fed up with the pay. Laminate appeals to me…much better pay and not as hard work. I don’t have much experience but have done a Floor Skills course, and watching lots of videos. Thoughts and advice appreciated?
My carpet fitter gets £7m2 on Average and my laminate fitter at least £12m2 join the NICF. Fit to a high standard. Do the jobs no one else can do. Work for the right shops.
As Daz said, you could try and expand on what you already know, naturals, stair runners and possibly border work, the majority of fitters aren't doing it,so you can charge decent money and get more satisfaction, rather than just yet another grey Saxony
It sounds like you have a lot of experience as a carpet and vinyl fitter, and are looking to expand your skillset by moving into laminate flooring. Laminate flooring can be a good option for those who are looking for a change and want to improve their earning potential. The good news is that many of the skills you have developed as a carpet and vinyl fitter will transfer over to laminate flooring installation. The Floor Skills course you have taken will also provide a solid foundation for your new venture. Learning by watching videos can be a great way to gain knowledge, but it is also important to get hands-on experience. You may want to consider starting with small projects, such as a small room or hallway, to gain experience and build confidence before taking on larger projects. It's also important to keep in mind that laminate flooring installation can have some challenges, such as dealing with uneven subfloors, expansion gaps, and ensuring a tight fit. It may be a good idea to consult with a professional flooring installer or take an advanced course in laminate flooring installation. Overall, it's a good idea to be prepared to put in the time and effort to learn the skill and practice. It's a great idea to try and get some hands-on experience and consult with professionals in the field. It's also important to keep in mind that the flooring industry may change and you should always be open to learning new technologies, materials and techniques.
