We accidentally left a damp (not wet) mop on our wooden floor. The finish turned black where the mop was sitting. It was there for perhaps two days. We think the finish is polyurethane.
    Why has this occurred?
How do we clean it off?
    Appreciate any information or advice.
    Cheers

Black marks on real wood floors are usually caused when the water penetrates the surface of the floor and goes into the grain of the wood.

to remove the marks you can either try a chlorine based bleach (you will prob have to leave on for a couple of hours when floor goes back to natural colour neutralise bleach with vinigar.)
or try sanding marks out of the wood and then applying a new protective top coat
