Question about staining pine - would grey work?

    Hi.

I'm currently refurbishing one of our bedrooms, and after deciding against carpet, opted for a solid wood floor.
The original floorboards under the carpet are a mish-mesh of damaged boards and hardboard strips after a wood rot problem, so we'll be replacing the lot.
Joists are solid so we're going to replace them with new boards as I say.

We were originally thinking a hardwood, but due to the size of the room and considering a lot of the floor will be covered up with bedroom furniture, we are now thinking of just going with redwood pine and staining it.

My question is, what colour could be applied that will look good and age well with this type of wood?
I don't really want to to with the natural pine colour for this room, and was thinking a grey would be nice.
It's just I don't know how that would fair on this type of wood as pine tends to yellow with age (I think).

    Any advice?

    Thank you very much!

No don't put down a plastic floor. Look at companies that make stains like Morrells, bona, osmo, treatex, Blanchon. Get some tester pots and. Try them on the planks first. Sand them to the grit your going to finish on to get the true colour

    I'll order some samples, thanks.
So is there any issue that could arise later on down the line as the wood ages? For example grey might look great now, but if the pine ends up going yellower it may not.

I would think it depends on how much natural light there is in that room, what type of pine it is....I think most wood floors look better with age and you can always apply another stain when needed

Also, would it be possible to paint and then seal the floors as opposed to
That looks cool. I like the white as well.

And yeah, painting might be a good option actually. What would you use to seal it?

Well there are two windows and the type of pine is Redwood pine.
I wouldn't be so bothered about it wearing; as you said, they often look better with age.

It would really a pain if it started to go really yellow after I'd stained or painted it.
It really wouldn't go with the room. As you said though, I guess you can restain.

    Thank you for your posts.

I'm intrigued by the idea of painting the floor and sealing it.
It would be cheaper and you'd have more control over colours.

Do you have any experience of this type of thing? I.e. Floor sanding and finishing?

I've sanded a pine floor down and applied protective oil. Never coloured or stained one, however.

In that case a coloured oil probably isn't the answer they need to be buffed in, with the PALLMANN Magic Oil trowelled and buffed. Morrells do a grey classique stain might be worth trying them. Good luck

Waste of time and money imo
You'll only have to redo it

Not with a good sealant on top.

Thanks for the comments. I'll check out the morrels stain suggested.
What sort of sealant would you use for a painted floor? Because that's something I'm also considering doing.

    Cheers

If you're painting the floor use floor paint. That shouldn't need sealing as the paint protects the floor.
