Take cheques from repeat customers no problem, new customers somtimes.I think you get a feel for people and can tell the goodun`s.

If I`m suspicious,I always state cash on completion or bankers draught/building society cheque.

Still mostly dont take a deposit, should really, but find customers get more confidence in knowing they pay up when the job is done to their satisfaction.

Not like Carpetwrong, take their money while they are satisfied in the shop then mess them about after they have the money and fit Sh*t 2nds carpet and overpriced poo underlay :D

We have fixed terms of payment, only labour costs have to be paid after completion of the job. Materials however: 50% of materials on order, 50 % on delivery. No complaints from clients about these terms and everyone knows exactly where they stand.

BTW, there is a huge "legal" difference between "taking a deposit" and "taking a first payment".

Deposit can more easily be asked back - because officially it only "indicates a sincere desire to purchase a product/service", where a 1st payment indicates a binding contract (the sale is definitely agreed).

Perhaps nitpicking, but in these times where more rogue clients seem to pop-up it is better to avoid the mentioning of "deposit" and use the phrase 1st payment.
