Won’t need to feather is if putting a smoothing compound on top. Is it unlevel ? You shouldn’t need to screed cover the ply at all if it’s flat.

I use the packout boxes now. Have set tools in each one. Power tools, sub floor prep, LVT , carpet and laminate. Works well for me.
I always left a small gap away from the skirts. About 3mm. Yes screw every 6” and 4” on the perimeter of each board
