See if the installer says anything about the original tiles. Was there anything on the quote about uplifting them or only the carpet? If only the carpet, the installer should have made you aware that they were there and discussed with you and the supplier what course of action to take. Some tiles contain asbestos. There is a free floating prep system available which could have possibly been used.
Should I refuse to pay the installer and just get someone else in to do it properly? Was I right after the initial self levelling compound to ask for it to be more level?
You were very right to ask for the floor to be levelled again.. "Should I refuse to pay the installer and just get someone else in to do it properly?" Personally, I'd at least give the installer the opportunity to put right...We've all dropped the ball at some point...If he starts to try and wriggle then kick him off the job. However, if he's conscientious and genuinely wants the job to be right, he'll tell you himself it's blown and needs to come up. Is it a young lad? Is he at the start of his career? I know you shouldn't be paying people for mistakes Els, but people should be given a chance to put things right. Even a second chance. Just my opinion mate..
So haven't been completely done then at least you have something for your money ! Just tell the shop or who ever you've bought your floor from you not happy with the work that's been done & you want it rectified by a competent installer preferably an approved luxury vinyl tile installer ! Buy don't pay more money to get it sorted it there responsibility to do correctly what you've been quoted for !
Thanks for this... Problem after this week (he's only here one day this week with a mate to finish the planking) he said he's busy for weeks. I also reckon he won't give his best if he's expected to almost start again.... Although he does seem a decent chap
Els, It's happened to me where I've made a simple error and it's essentially meant I was paying for part of the job out of my own pocket and not making a bean. It's a hard thing to swallow sometimes, but I'm glad that past customers have given me the opportunity to rectifying the situation and at the same time climbing a rather steep learning curve. It is obviously your choice and you have a better feel for the situation as you've had a dialogue with him and can base your judgement from that..
Bought the karndean from the shop, just paying him labour separately... The shop paid for the extra compound to try and level the floor not me.
I appreciate mistakes happen but these cracks sound serious? Ie a big job to rectify? And we can't do without flooring for the whole of the downstairs for weeks to come ,,, do I really say to him I'm not going to pay you until it's done properly? ...although the answer seems obvious! I'll talk to karndean technical in the morning see what they recommend... They might send someone out to look at it? So fed up!
So if the guy can't do the work & do it properly coz he's busy in theory they could get someone else for you to do it I think you've got a couple of phone calls to make tomorrow ! Hope you get it sorted & if you have any problems with them tell them to read this thread !
Aslo please let us know what happens because I don't know about any one else but I won't sleep tonight ?
Ig he's only got one day to give you I suggest you get him to spend that lifting the screed that's blown. Then you can possibly get another fitter in sooner to do the work
When a screed sounds hollow it doesn't always mean its blown.over ceramics an Ashpalt an will sound hollow. Had cracks in screed before and now had a issue. If the screed is moving though it will need taking up. Was it ceramics or maybe vinyl tiles on the floor?
